Eddie Slovak meets an old Army buddy named Pete who once saved his life. He intends to repay his friend. He offers him money for a business, but Peter refuses. Eddie tries to talk to Pete's wife Louise. Louise falls for Eddie and the two become romantically involved. Eddie eventually kills her. Later he explains to Pete that he did him a favor since she was cheating on him. Pete calls the police and Eddie is arrested. Pete goes to see Eddie's girlfriend and explains that their plan worked. Louise is dead and Eddie is out of the way. Now, the two of them can be together.

Through one year we follow the Norwegian artist Vebjørn Sand towards his exhibition: Guernica a turning point. During this process, he visits places in Guernica where attacks carried out in 1937. He meets with survivors and does research for his work. Compared to Picasso's famous painting of Guernica, Vebjørn wants to represent the scenes of the bombardment realistic and figurative, with the color pallet of the 1880s classical painters. We follow him to New York where he works day and night to get the exhibition done. After an accident, while running, he is forced to stay in Norway. Recovering at his parent's house, he has to lay a new strategy to be able to finish his work. It is a journey through an artist's inner thoughts around art, himself and the continuing battle with his work.

Samson Shillitoe, a frustrated poet and a magnet for women, is behind in his alimony payments, and lives with Rhoda, a waitress who stands by him through all his troubles. Samson becomes belligerent when he cannot find the inspiration to finish his big poem so Rhoda tries to get him to see the psychiatrist Dr. West, who claims to be able to cure writer's block. Samson ends up being pursued by various women while trying to evade the subpoena servers and finish his poem.
